When Marcus Langford, arrogant son of the Alliance’s Energy Minister, arrives to inspect Sector Seven, he humiliates Kane and shatters his right shoulder bone for daring to stand up for his collapsing sister. Stripped of his assessment qualification, Kane is sentenced to the deadly Death Mine, a prison labor camp where convicts work to the brink of death.

Using the core’s power, Kane fakes his own death, escapes the mine aboard a waste transport ship, and flees to Free Port, an unregulated space station haven for outcasts. Adopting the alias "Ember", he fights underground gladiator matches to earn medicine shipments for Ella back on the trash planet, striking a risky deal with Free Port crime lord Morlock for steady supply routes.
The Alliance’s Energy Minister Wester Langford, Marcus’s father, dispatches elite hunter Selena Vasa and her squad to hunt down Kane, labeling him an energy thief. Upon tracking the fugitive, Selena uncovers the Alliance’s brutal cover-up: the government intends to wipe out every witness to the Star Core, including tens of thousands of innocent civilians on Free Port. Horrified by the corruption and mass murder orders, she abandons her hunter identity and sides with Kane.
As three Alliance warships led by Marcus lay siege to Free Port to raze the station, Kane unites the station’s downtrodden laborers, refugees and former slaves armed with Star Core-modified explosives. He single-handedly destroys two enemy battleships at the cost of his own physical form—his body gradually crystallizes from overusing the core’s power.
Before his physical form dissipates into stardust, Kane channels the Star Core’s energy across the galaxy, awakening dormant Star Core fragments in seven distant colonial worlds. He entrusts Selena to retrieve Ella and guide the newly awakened stellar bearers scattered across the stars.
